What this GPU cost estimate includes

The local estimate combines acquisition cost, expected resale value, device and host power, electricity rate, and planned utilization. GPU reference prices and listed power values are starting points; every consequential input is editable.

When you add a cloud hourly quote, GPU Hunter calculates the cost of renting for the same active hours and the mathematical crossover point. It does not assume a provider, region, commitment, storage, egress, or minimum charge.

How to get a more useful answer

  1. Replace the reference GPU price with your complete delivered hardware cost, including any system components you still need.
  2. Use measured wall power for your actual inference workload when available; listed TDP is only a conservative starting point.
  3. Enter the all-in electricity rate from your bill and a realistic active-hours schedule rather than assuming 24/7 utilization.
  4. Compare against a quote for the specific cloud GPU, region, and billing model you would actually use.

How do I calculate the electricity cost of a GPU?

Multiply total system kilowatts by active hours and your all-in electricity rate. GPU Hunter starts with listed GPU power plus an editable host-system assumption; wall power can differ, so replace both with measurements when possible.

Does the calculator use live GPU or cloud prices?

No. Hardware values begin with GPU Hunter's Apr 30, 2026 reference dataset, and cloud pricing is an optional value you enter. The calculator does not claim a live utility, retailer, or provider quote.

How is local GPU cost per hour calculated?

The calculator adds acquisition and electricity costs over the selected period, subtracts expected residual value, and divides the result by planned active hours. Taxes, financing, maintenance, cooling, and downtime remain outside the estimate unless you include them in the hardware input.

When is buying a GPU cheaper than renting one?

Buying crosses over when the unrecovered hardware cost divided by the difference between the cloud hourly quote and local energy cost per hour is lower than your planned use. If the cloud quote is no higher than local variable energy cost, there is no mathematical crossover under those inputs.

Should I use GPU TDP as average power draw?

Only as a conservative starting assumption. Listed TDP or maximum power is not measured wall draw for your workload. Replace it with observed average device power and include the rest of the system separately for a better estimate.
